WORK AND TIME SHORTCUTS

Work and Time is one of the important topics to cover for almost all competitive exams such as IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, CAT,GMAT,MAT,CMAT, and XAT.
There are 4-5 types of work and time problems, which are often repeated in competitive exams. In this post we will learn how to solve these work and time based problems in the matter of seconds by using shortcut methods.

Type 1: A can do a piece of work in x days and B can do it in y days then how long will they take if both work together?
The Shortcut Trick : clip_image002
Now, let us take few examples to understand how to use above formula.
Example 1: Manish can do a job in 20 days and Satish can do the same job in 30 days. How long would they take to do it working together?
Solution: clip_image002[8]
Example 2: A can do a job in 5 days and B can do the same job in 6 days. How long would they take to do it working together?clip_image002[10]
Type 2: A and B together can do a piece of work in x days and A alone can do it in y days then how long will B take if he works alone?
The Shortcut Trick : clip_image002[12]
Example 1: A and B working together can finish a work in piece of work in 6 days. B alone can do it in 8 days. In how many days A alone could finish?
Solution: clip_image002[14]
Example 2: Anupma and Babli working together can finish a work in piece of work in 6 days. Babli alone can do it in 9 days. In how many days can Anupma alone finish it ?
Solution: clip_image002[16]
Type 3: A, B and C can do a piece of work in x,y and z days respectively, then how long will they take if all work together?
The Shortcut Trick : clip_image002[18]
Example 1 Rajan, Ramesh and Suresh can do a work in 6,12 and 24 days respectively. In what time will they altogether do it?
Solution: clip_image002[20]

(Tip – you don’t need to multiply the numerators or denominators together as it may consume your valuable time, instead try to find the commons as I did  above.)
MORE USES OF THE ABOVE FORMULAE
We can use the above formulae(type 1,type 2, type 3) to solve slightly different kind of work and time problems.Lets take few examples:
Q 1: A can do a work in 7 days. If A does twice as much work as B in a given time. Find how long A and B would take to do the work together?
Solution: Since, A is twice as efficient as B, hence B will do the work in 7*2=14 days.
Now put these values in the formula clip_image002[24]clip_image002[26]
Q 2: A and B can finish a field work in 30 days, B and C in 40 days while C and A in 60 days. How long will they take to finish it together?
Solution: 2(A+B+C) will do the work in clip_image002[38]
Therefore, (A+B+C) will do the work in clip_image002[42]
